Templates are a shortcut. They are also how fonts go missing on the other person’s PC.

WPS advertises a large template library for Writer, Presentation, Spreadsheets, and PDF. Some packs are free. The pretty ones often sit behind Premium. This page is about using them without creating a compatibility ticket.

What the gallery actually is

Kingsoft’s store copy talks about 100,000+ templates in influencer quotes and “limited vs unlimited” in the Free vs Pro table. Treat those numbers as marketing. What you will see in the app is a mix of local starters and online downloads that need a network and sometimes a login.

A template is a styled DOCX, PPTX, or XLSX with placeholders. If it uses a display font the recipient does not have, the layout reflows. If it uses text boxes instead of styles, accessibility and table-of-contents tools suffer. If it is locked as Premium, you are not “broken” — you hit a SKU wall.

A campus-safe resume

Pick a one-column layout. Set the body font to Calibri or Arial. Put contact details in the header, not in a floating text box over a photo. Export PDF for the portal; keep DOCX for edits. More in the student chapter and Writer.

  1. Insert → your name as Heading 1, not 28 pt bold typed by hand in five places.
  2. Use a table or tab stops for dates, not a row of spaces.
  3. Compress the headshot. A 12 MB JPEG is not a personality.
  4. Print Preview at 100 percent. If a line wraps oddly, it will wrap on the recruiter’s laptop too.

Invoices and letterhead

Small shops can start from a Spreadsheets invoice template or a Writer letter. Put the tax ID in a footer. Number invoices in a separate register so you do not duplicate INV-014. Flatten to PDF before you mail it so prices cannot nudge. See small business.

Lesson plans and lab sheets

Teachers often inherit a Word template with locked styles. Open it in Writer, do not convert to WPS native format, and save as DOCX. If the department later opens it in Word, you want that round-trip. If a content control or form field dies, finish that file in Word on a lab PC.

Pitch decks

AI can dump a 12-slide skeleton from a paragraph. Delete the stock icons. Put one real chart from Spreadsheets. Embed fonts. Carry a PDF spare on a USB. Presentation notes.

When a blank file is better

Legal pleadings, journal submissions, and grant portals often reject “designed” templates. Start blank, apply the institution’s style sheet, and ignore the gallery. A template that looks expensive in the store preview is still wrong if the call for papers wants Times New Roman 12, double-spaced, 1-inch margins.

Offline and privacy

Online template download sends a request to Kingsoft’s servers. For a confidential org chart, do not start from a cloud pack you have not inspected. Duplicate a local file you already trust.
