Compatibility is a default save setting, a font, and a PDF — not a slogan.

Kingsoft advertises 47 file formats and 46 languages (13 on PC, 46 on mobile in their office page copy). Wikipedia’s older format list still matches what people send you in email.

Layout survival kit

  1. Default save = DOCX / XLSX / PPTX.
  2. Use real styles, tabs, and page breaks.
  3. Embed fonts or stick to Arial / Calibri / Times.
  4. Check Print Preview before you send.
  5. If the file must not move, send PDF.
  6. Leave macros in one suite.

What “47 formats” does not mean

Kingsoft’s office page advertises 47 formats. That is a count of extensions the suite can open or save, not a promise that every Excel 365 dynamic array, every Word content control, and every PowerPoint morph transition will round-trip pixel-perfect. Compatibility is a probability. Raise it with boring defaults; do not bet a court filing on a slogan.

Round-trip tests worth running

  1. Create a two-page letter in Word with a header, footer, and a table. Open in Writer, save, reopen in Word.
  2. Build a sheet with SUMIF, a named range, and a chart. Open in Spreadsheets, recalc, save, reopen in Excel.
  3. Drop a 16:9 deck with a video placeholder. Open in Presentation. If the video vanishes, you know before the client meeting.

Ten minutes of tests beat a week of email about “your file is broken.”

Google Docs and LibreOffice

WPS marketing also claims comfort with Google Docs/Sheets/Slides and mentions OpenOffice-class files in store copy. Download a Drive file as DOCX/XLSX/PPTX first. Opening a native Google link inside WPS is not the same as Docs in a browser. LibreOffice ODT/ODS/ODP support exists in the wider office ecosystem; still export OOXML when the other person lives in Microsoft or WPS.

Languages and proofing

Vendor copy splits 13 desktop languages versus 46 on mobile. Spellcheck is not the same as having a font. Russian, Arabic, and CJK documents fail in visually spectacular ways when the PC only has Latin fonts. Install the writing pack, then complain.

Macros, ActiveX, and mail merge data

DOC M / XLSM files may open and still strip or ignore code. Treat macros as Excel-owned. Mail merge data should be XLSX with a single header row, UTF-8 if you pass through CSV, and no merged cells in the header.

The 47-format claim

Kingsoft markets 47+ formats across the suite. Opening a file is not the same as round-tripping every feature. DOC/DOCX, XLS/XLSX, PPT/PPTX, and PDF are the daily set. Legacy .wps/.et/.dps are fine as personal archives and hostile as email attachments. Save as Microsoft formats unless you are sure everyone else has WPS.

Macros, ActiveX, embedded OLE

VBA that drives a factory spreadsheet should stay in Excel. Embedded Visio, equations from old MathType, and ActiveX form controls are the usual “it opened but the button does nothing” tickets. Finish those files in the original suite. Formulas.

Fonts are a compatibility feature
